Tires in need of replacement - Visuals: use a coin and check the tread.

Masking the engine compartment – Visuals: even though the car is detailed, look for hidden problems such as radiator hose that is ready to blow

Make sure car hasn’t been in a wreck, and if so, that the warranty transfers – Visuals: Frank will show how to check various areas to determine if repairs have been done. Look at warranties.

Vehicle too detailed or too clean? Too much could mean hiding an expensive repair or problem.

Recalls – with long waits, have they been performed? Visuals: take the VIN# and make sure it is clear.

Auto Fluid Leaks Traced by Color

The color of the fluid you see leaking can be traced back to a specific part of your vehicle that needs repaired. Here is an easy way to remember:

Blue: Most likely windshield wiper fluid, which means your vehicle may have a hole or crack in the fluid reservoir or a malfunction in system-related tubing.

Clear: AC condensation (which is thin like water) or newer brake fluid (which has a medium consistency and an oily feel). For AZ residents who use their air conditioner more than the heater, it’s not unusual for a little clear condensation to escape your A/C system.

Dark brown: Brake fluid or motor oil. Touch it to help determine the cause. Brake fluid: it’s easy to confuse older brake fluid with motor oil, however a brake fluid leak is a serious problem. If you suspect the liquid beneath your vehicle, usually around the wheels or just under where the brake pedal is located is brake fluid, call your mechanic. Brake fluid will have a more slimy feel than greasy. DO NOT take the risk of driving.

Motor oil: Oil leaks at the front of your vehicle can include a worn gasket, corroded oil line, improperly attached oil filter, or a stripped or leaky drain plug. Check your oil before driving any further.

Green, orange, pink, red or yellow: Antifreeze or radiator coolant. Why so many colors? All are for different models. A severe leak could indicate a faulty water pump, loose clamp, damaged hose, or worn O-ring. Since antifreeze is poisonous to pets and local wildlife, such leaks always merit a call to a mechanic.

Light brown: Gear lubricant (which has a bad odor) or newer motor oil. Old automatic transmission fluid may turn brown with extended use. An issue with gear lubricant leakage is often on or near the wheels and suggests a worn seal or that it is time to service the gearbox.

Red: transmission fluid. This leak will happen around the front of your vehicle and means you have a faulty fluid line or worn seal and it is usually accompanied by a high pitch whine.

What are Shocks and Struts? Shocks are part of the overall suspension, and a Strut is a complete suspension assembly and are critical to keeping you safe.

The 3 main safety areas they affect are Steering, Stability (handling), and Stopping (braking).

Shocks and struts are not just for ride comfort, their primary function is tire control. They are located at each corner of your wheels to cushion your vehicle while driving on road surfaces.

Steering: Sneakers keep your feet suspended and cushion your body while walking or running. Struts and shocks act in a similar fashion, keeping your vehicle cushioned and comfortable while maintaining safety.

An award-winning Chandler auto repair shop that emphasizes customer service is giving back to the community and aiming to help the environment with a special event on Monday, April 22, in celebration of Earth Day.

Desert Car Care of Chandler will hold a recycle event, and is inviting the public to bring boxes, loose papers, car batteries, automotive fluids and old paint 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the business, 22 at 95 N. Dobson Road. ShredSolutions will do the shredding.

Frank Leutz, who owns Desert Car Care of Chandler with his wife, Josephine Leutz, said his business provides “factory-level service and repairs with a focus on a personalized service experience.”

Desert Car Care mechanics investigate check engine lights to see if there are issues with a vehicle, perform air-conditioning repairs, fix brakes, perform oil changes, do engine tune-ups, diagnose problems when vehicles fail emissions tests and carry out many, other services. It offers a 25,000 mile or 25-month warranty on recommended parts and labor.

“We specialize in all under hood and under carriage AC, electrical, brakes, engine performance and maintenance services,” Frank said. “The level of service is very unique by way of the service experience we provide, the type of service experience and our community outreach, our ability to make this a vessel for the community.”

Desert Car Care of Chandler’s technicians are all National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified and one is a master-level ASE technician.

Customers can access complimentary rental cars and Lyft shuttles to get to and from home and work while their vehicles are serviced. Desert Car Care’s technicians must take 40 hours of ongoing technical training per year.

Desert Car Care of Chandler has received many awards including making the top 10 in the automotive full service/repair category in “Ranking Arizona” from 2015 to this year, receiving the 2016 Small Business of the Year Award from Chandler Chamber of Commerce and getting the Best Auto Repair distinction from the “East Valley Tribune” in 2015.

Frank is active in the community and automotive industry and he and his team provide many automotive clinics to Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the YMCA and for senior citizens in New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning, a Mesa Community College program.

The store manager Susie Wong, who goes by the radio name Susie Sockets, are co-hosts on a radio show, “Wrench Nation – Car Talk Radio Show,” which is broadcast live every Wednesday at 4 p.m. on 88.7 FM The Pulse.

The radio show is replayed later on NEON 90.7 FM and 1100 KFNX AM radio stations and Frank and Sockets also do a podcast of the show.

Active in the automotive industry, Frank is the past president of the Automotive Service Association of Arizona’s Phoenix chapter. Now he serves as a board member of the Mechanical Division Operations Committee of the Automotive Service Association. He is also on the East Valley Institute of Technology’s automotive and radio advisory boards.

Frank opened his first auto garage in 1995 in Phoenix before Frank and Josephine opened Desert Car Care of Chandler in 2004.

He entered the automotive industry in 1990. Frank played jazz and classical trombone and performed with jazz legends including Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis and Lionel Hampton, showcasing his talents at Carnegie Hall.

He said he put his trombone down and joined the Navy, where he performed mine sweep operations in the Persian Gulf. After leaving the military Frank began his work at an auto repair garage.

He is looking forward to once again helping the community at the Earth Day shredding gathering.

“This is an opportunity for the community to gather all of the junk, specifically any paper items that need to be shredded,” Frank said. “It’s a great way to clean out the garage and come on down.”

People can also bring up to 20 gallons of fluids including oil and automotive fluids per household and up to two car batteries per home to be shredded.

John Nucci, owner of ShredSolutions, said, “We’re looking forward to our partnership with them, Earth Day and building more awareness to people. We’re looking forward to a good turnout.”

ShredSolutions provides services to commercial and residential customers including people cleaning out papers from their storage units and garages and clients who want their hair dryers, CDs and hard drives shredded.

Business clients put paper into locked, executive containers in their offices and ShredSolutions comes to pick them up.

“All our paper goes to a paper mill,” and is recycled, Nucci said. “They make new pulp for new paper.”

For items other than paper, ShredSolutions always tries to find an end user so the materials do not end up in a landfill.

Shredding paperwork is important to clear space, as well as for medical facilities to comply with privacy laws and to help save trees and aid the environment, Nucci said.

Cooling system – this keeps the engine operating at a constant temperature and changing out a radiator hose at 80,000-100,000 miles is around $200-$300, not taken care of, can turn into thousands $$$$ in engine damage.

Steering & Suspension – there are a number of bushings that affect the car's suspension, rubber mounts that keep the car from handling erratically. Keep them lubricated to maintain engine stability and have them inspected if you are hearing an audible clunk when going over bumps.

Belts – Replacement of a timing belt for preventive measures typically costs $500 to $900. Replacing a broken timing belt may cost $2,000 or more if it has caused damage to the valves, pistons or water pump.

Tires – Perform monthly tire tread checks to stay safe on your journey.

If you own or love a car or attended this year’s Ostrich Festival and met a man who looked like he walked right out of a German Oktoberfest celebration, you may have met Frank Leutz, COO of Desert Car Care of Chandler.

As a small business owner in Chandler for 11 years, Frank is very involved in the community and will go to any lengths to support it – even wearing his native German lederhosen promoting votes for Chandler’s eventual win in the “Battle of the ‘Burbs.”

Leutz’s fun-loving personality was channeled by a junior high school music teacher who became his mentor. His classical trombone lessons led to performances at Carnegie Hall and acceptance to New York’s music and art’s original “Fame” high school.

There, he expanded his training and performed with greats Dizzy Gillespie, Branford Marsalis, and Lionel Hampton, as a jazz/salsa trombonist.

After school, Frank headed to the Navy receiving life-skills essential to building a business.

His dedicated team of seven full-timers and two interns, from EVIT’s automotive school, enjoy a family-oriented culture and are proud of the awards from the “East Valley Tribune’s” Best of Chandler to Small Business of the Year by the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.

Frank’s wife Josephine shares he is a dedicated father to their daughters Victoria and Natalee, rarely missing a school event and always making time to be together. His eldest, Victoria, graduated from Arizona State University last month and 9-year old Natalee, is a student at St. Francis Xavier.

Natalee was 3 years old when her biological mother, Josephine’s niece, suddenly died. Josephine and Frank are raising Natalee like their own daughter. Natalee thrives in their home, and Frank recently helped her win a business venture competition, buying supplies and sharing sales skills, earning her first place by selling out of her Slime product line.

Courageous, talented, patient and understanding are words his daughters use to describe their father. They say he is a man who devotes time to his family and strangers in need of a compassionate heart and a quiet hero in service to others.

The culture he creates within his small business has impacted many lives and spreading optimism throughout the community is one of many reasons their father will always be their hero.

Frank is happy operating his business in Chandler because of the diverse culture and vibrant community that exudes an old-fashioned neighborhood flavor. It welcomes an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit for a small business to thrive.

Those pesky squeaks from the suspension of your car can be frustrating, to say the least. We investigate the source of squeaks on the Dodge Charger and find a pretty easy fix.

Ensure that you inspect all steering and suspension linkages for wear — specifically any cracked or missing portions and loose connections. If you run in to dry bushings that do not seem cracked — you can typically spray them with some Silla -Lube Spray and that may do the trick in reducing or eliminating the squeak\s.

In the case of this Dodge Charger –the shocks & springs were recently replaced with an Eibach spring kit & we inspected a rear shock mount that had separated causing the shaft of the shock and or the rubber separating portion to squeak terribly.

Torres, who graduated in 2014 from New School for the Arts & Academics, a Tempe charter school, enrolled at EVIT in the 2014-15 school year through the “Young Grads” program, which allows high school graduates under the age of 22 to receive state-funded career and technical education. That program was cut by the state Legislature in 2015, but current students were grandfathered in to be able to complete their programs.

“The Young Grads program has served a population in dire need of career training,” said EVIT Superintendent Dr. Sally Downey. “The Young Grads are students who graduated from high school without employable skills and no plans for career or college. There is no better population for workforce development. The students need the training and business and industry needs the skilled workers that training provides. It’s win-win.”

EVIT offers over 40 occupation-specific programs tuition-free for high school students who live in 10 East Valley school districts. Students take their academic courses at their high school for a half-day and advanced career training at an EVIT central campus for a half-day. EVIT also offers tuition-based programs for adults, with financial aid available for those who qualify.

Torres was unable to fit EVIT into his high school schedule, so he enrolled in EVIT’s Automotive Technologies program after graduating. He also took some Welding courses at EVIT. If the Young Grads program had not been in place, he would have had to pay tuition, like all other adult students. He credits the Young Grad program and EVIT for giving him the career success he is already enjoying.

“Before the program, I didn’t know left from right,” he said. “After training and going into the industry, I am more prepared than the average guy with more room to grow.”

While at EVIT, Torres earned six out of eight ASE certifications, which, he said, showed employers that “I took school more seriously than others have.” He also got the opportunity to spend three days in job shadowing at Desert Car Care Center, which led directly to him being hired there.

Job shadowing and internships are a major part of the EVIT Automotive program and often lead to employment. According to the Arizona Automobile Dealers Association, EVIT places more Automotive students in internships than any other school in the nation. The program also offers dual enrollment college credit through Mesa Community College and Gateway Community College.

EVIT’s other programs include Construction, Culinary Arts, Firefighting, Aviation, Engineering, Graphic Design, a variety of Health programs, and much more.

Torres highly recommends EVIT to others. “Don’t get stuck wondering if you should have done it,” he said. “You don’t know until you do.”

Brake Adjustment 55 Cadillac Eldorado

It is always great to take a break from all the fancy of technology and just take some time enjoying the beauty of a classic.

The 55 Cadillac Eldorado has been kept up over the years and mechanically looks awesome. A slight brake pedal fade requires a brake adjustment at all 4 wheels.

As brake dust can cause some brake squeaks, always good measure to ensure you take the steps to clean out. We utilized a quick-drying Zep aerosol, but you can use soapy water as a very good substitute.

The adjustment to the brake shoe lining can be done typically using a brake adjustment spoon from the backside of drum backing plate area. As the adjustments are made, resistance should be felt as you are spinning the drum, while carefully not over adjusting as this can cause brakes to lock up.

Toyota No Power

We dive into the Toyota Prius that came in originally with a lack of power when accelerating. After discussions with the owner of the vehicle and recent repair history, we discovered an interesting situation.

After elsewhere repaired an exhaust leak at the exhaust donut, the vehicle started to exhibit a serious symptom of no power when accelerating. We determined that the original leak was caused by excessive back pressure from a clogged/restricted catalytic converter.

The converter substrate is a honeycomb style filter that is compromised of rhodium, platinum, and palladium. These precious metals that coat the converter allow for the catalyst (a speeding up of a gas change); converting the spent noxious gas fumes of carbon monoxide to spew through the substrate and ultimately out of the tailpipe as carbon dioxide. When this substrate starts to come apart, it can lodge in the exhaust piping, causing restriction and a lack of flow—in turn, a serious lack of power when accelerating.

It is important to understand that excessive, or partially-burnt fuel remnants that are deposited into the bed of this substrate can cause damage. If your upstream air-fuel management is not operating efficiently this eventually can be a problem for the catalytic converter.

Always ensure that the spark plugs, along with remaining secondary ignition components are working as designed with no faults or wear. They just will not be able to properly burn the fuel in the combustion chamber. Additionally, it is imperative to ensure then fuel injectors are atomizing the fuel and not misting droplets of fuel. This raw unburnt fuel can cause serious damage to the Catalytic Converter.

Remember that these converters usually do not go bad on their own, and more than likely there are other causes to failure.

When an extended crank hard start exists and there is NO check engine light illuminated on the dash, one of the often neglected and forgotten items to service / replace is the fuel filter.

The fuel filter will trap contaminants and over time can slowly become restricted, and on some occasions cause a lack of volume of fuel to the injection system, and in turn create an extended crank situation.

Oil Change – Engine Oil Clues To Engine Health

Changing engine oil is not the most difficult thing you will run up against when servicing your vehicle. You drain the oil, replace the oil filter, take the time to flashlight check the vehicle and perhaps top off a few fluids.

Your engine oil, however, can be giving you vital clues as to the very health of your engine. We examine a few of the most important clues of what the aged oil you just drained from the engine could be revealing about the state of your engine health.

Here are a few common signs of trouble to say the least:

Chocolate Milk Oil:

If the engine oil is draining out like your favorite tasting Hershey’s Chocolate Milk, that is a sign of trouble. Specifically with the engine coolant system, as engine oil mixing with coolant or water will end up pouring like chocolate milk. When an engine overheats or runs warmer longer than designed, that vital head gasket will start to unseat the coolant ports and ultimately start seeping this coolant over into the oil ports. This extreme heat can cause warpage to the cylinder head surface and wreak havoc with your engine.

If you're looking to purchase a used vehicle, immediately inspect the engine oil dipstick or backside of engine oil filler cap to leak for engine oil clues. If you discover a chocolate milk substance..be aware that this particular vehicle more than likely sustained higher than normal levels of engine temperature and major repairs are in its future…be cautious here!

Grayish Metallic Oil:

If the old engine oil has any metallic flakes & appears gray in color, there is a high likelihood that the metal moving parts like the rod or main bearing journals are starting to slowly come apart. This is a major indication that the motor is tired and will need major work. Again, if you are purchasing a used vehicle, this us a sure sign to start looking at other potential buys.

Honey Oil:

In terms of honey oil, this is pretty self-explanatory. A gooey, tacky-like substance from the engine oil is typically a sign, especially when looking to purchase a used vehicle, that there is a major underlying concern with an engine knock or noise. This honey oil is used to mask or hide temporarily engine noise. This thicker oil will help to take up excessive clearances in the rod or main bearing and help reduce any engine noise that is subsequent from internal engine damage. Stay clear away here if this stuff is discovered on the engine oil dipstick.

Strawberry Milk Oil:

Not related to engine oil, but surely a major problem. When the transmission cooler, which on some designs is mounted internally to the radiator, develops a leak, the engine coolant inside the radiator will mix with the transmission fluid and create a medley of what will look like strawberry milk. You can inspect the coolant to identify to ensure this is not an issue.

Gas Mixed With Diesel. Will This Fix Work?

Accidentally filling your Diesel Truck with Gas can be frustrating. The potential damage to the diesel injection system can cost thousands of dollars. We have had several of these scenarios come through the garage throughout the year, and when we can repeat these procedures with success (sometimes not the case)…a feel good for us and the owner of the vehicle for sure!

In this video, we reveal tips on what you can do to help avoid replacing expensive fuel system components like the injection pump, injectors, and fuel pump/module.

Removing the filter and water separator along with completely draining all remnants of the gas is crucial, as gas can be very abrasive to the fuel system.

Toyota Noise From The Dash

A howling or groaning noise from the glove box area of the dash when adjusting the volume settings of your ac/heat settings is typically the blower motor assembly.

Always ensure that leaves and debris are clear from the cowl area of the windshield base, as this can ultimately end up in the blower motor casing and cause а noise as the wheel of the blower motor is spinning.

Caution for the Air Bag Circuit connectors (they are a bright yellow and, typically for this service, do not require unplugging). Disconnecting the battery for every service or repair that you may be performing is always a good measure. Using a battery saver will ensure you do not lose radio presets.

Denso OE Parts are always recommended for Japanese Imports.

When replacing the blower as an assembly, it is best practice to replace the related blower resistor, as they work hand in hand.

Exposed! What Coolant Stop Leak Looks Like

From time to time you may decide that stop leak can be an alternative to an actual repair of a coolant leak if it seems minor.

The Buick came in with an overheat condition, and in all actuality, the overheating situation was attributed to the stop leak built up inside the coolant system. (Radiator with goop EXPOSED @ 2:25)

You may stop a minor leak, but over time the expansion process of stop leak can restrict flow in the radiator, heater core, and many of the smaller ports to the coolant system in general.

A great product if you're stuck somewhere. Not so great if you forget to flush this goop out and ultimately repair what is leaking.

Additionally, the rusty coolant pouring out is from a lack of coolant system maintenance. Remember to check the factory specification for the required coolant change out as per maintenance.

Infiniti Check Engine Light Po171 Lean

The Infiniti arrived at the garage with no check engine light initially, and a noticeable hesitation when accelerating.

During the road test, the check engine light did eventually illuminate and I did feel an intermittent hesitation when accelerating from a stop.

After a brief inspection, it was quickly noted that the air induction boot had separated and was sucking in air. This would make perfect sense, as the computer did store a bank one system lean fault (PO171).

I always like to keep the duck tape around my vehicle just in case something like this happens, you can easily temporarily bandage the area of leaks until you get it to a point of a permanent repair.

Panty Hose Used For Broken Belt Will It Work?

We started with a standard pantyhose and looped around the water pump and alternator (of course, these 2 are vital as we need to limp to the next exit with good charring of battery and quenching of coolant system). You will not have AC (stop sniveling if you're stuck in the desert..you will be just fine. ), and power steering (prepare to regurgitate power steering fluid when steering and make a complete mess here for sure).

The first start of pantyhose did not work out. Perhaps we can blame the quality of said manufacturer of pantyhose, as well as the lack of material for this experiment. We shall try a thicker brand. More of a sock if you will.

Now tying a knot that will last is crucial. (Keep a knot tying Navy manual in the glove box just in case). In addition, the tension on the pulleys is going to be extra important.

A second engine start, and we have approximately 2.9 seconds dedicated to a functioning circulation of vital pulleys. Enough for us to travel about half a foot..maybe.

In reviewing this experiment we realized a few things:

1) Roadside assistance would have been nice.

2) Panty Hose will more than likely not work for serpentine belt style setups.

3)Duck Tape may have been the answer the whole time.

So..there you have it. If you can make it happen we would love to see your working video of pantyhose utilized to get you several exits or miles to get things fixed. (V Rib Belts do not count for obvious reasons)

Easy Way To Check Catalytic Converter

A very efficient way of testing a catalytic converter for efficiency, especially with a failure of emissions, specifically a NOX (Oxides of Nitrogen failure).

Ensure engine is at operating temperature and utilize a digital thermometer.

The key is a difference of at least 100 degrees from the inlet and outlet. This typically indicates the catalyst is not taking place and can cause higher NOX readings.

Ensuring that the air-fuel management system is dialed in is crucial, as in most occasions these catalytic converters will not fail on their own. Make sure that the air-fuel management system is working as designed. (Spark plugs, ignition wires, mass air flow sensor, fuel injectors …to mention a few ).

Additionally, as it is highly the case here, if your engine is consuming oil via oil rings or valve train, this oil will eventually embed itself in the substrate of the converter, and eventually, cause damage.

Dodge Dart Brake Caliper Noise

We deal with a variety of noise-related concerns that can come rolling into the garage. This Dodge Dart was no exception as an odd rattle was clearly evident from the front of the vehicle.

Driving over rough patches of road surfaces and speed bumps was when the culprit noise concern would rear its ugly head. A simple road test over speed bumps and we were able to distinguish the rattle and isolate a general area from the wheels as to were it was coming from.

Getting the vehicle hoisted in the air we did quickly determine that the brake caliper was excessive in movement when not applying brakes. Now on most occasions as per the design of the brake caliper, there will be some slight movement, but in this case, too much and subsequently the noise source.

Anytime we determine the source of a fault we will research information regarding technical service bulletins (T.S.B) as well as any potential open recall information. This allows us to ensure that we are not missing any updated designs to fix or more importantly make sure the repair is not a current RECALL candidate. It is important that you do the same before diving into repairs.

There are many websites claiming Recall information, however, go right to the regulated source, as there will be less ambiguity.

Water Pump Toyota Corolla

Noise from an engine can be a multitude of different faults. In this case of the Toyota Corolla, a few other garages had estimated what they thought was an internal engine failure. (Timing chain and one other garage quoted a cylinder head replacement as per valve issue.)

Not the case, as we quickly discovered.

Our garage has some pretty fancy tools to get most things diagnosed, but in this case, we utilized a pretty simple setup by way of the stethoscope.

Be extra cautious while using the stethoscope tip\probe when the engine is running. You can probe the backside of the water pump, as we did, and quickly identify an internal shaft\bearing defect within that component. Additionally, if you have an alternator bearing on its way out, you will be able to identify a similar moan\woan\rattle type of noise.

We were grateful that we could give the client the good news, and replaced the water pump to eliminate the noise.

One last point regarding the water pump and coolant system in general. It is crucial that you stick to the guidelines of maintaining the coolant\antifreeze at regular intervals, so you don’t actually prematurely wear out coolant system parts such as the water pump.

My Toyota Sienna Won’t Start

A pretty frustrating morning for the owner of this Toyota Sienna, as it out of nowhere developed a no start condition and was towed into the garage.

Crank No start: Typically a fault within the air-fuel management system or input\output sensors of the drivetrain. When the engine is cranking the primary voltage of the vehicle (battery, cables, relays, ignition switch) for the most part are operating as designed.

No Crank No Start: Inspecting the basics of the starting system will reveal a defective starter (checking voltage to the starter will be conclusive), battery,cables\connections, ignition switch or ground points.

In this particular situation we had plenty of voltage to the starter, however, the gear was not engaging the flywheel to actually crank the engine. Over time, from wear and tear, the starter can develop this symptom and will need to be replaced. Additionally ensuring there are no oil or coolant leaks in the area of the starter will ensure it stays dry and does not develop any concerns electrically.

I Recommend utilizing a Denso Starter for premium quality and longevity, as it is the Japanese original equipment to the Toyota platform.

With a very noticeable clicking noise coming from the rear driver's side area located near the rear hatch, as well as warm air only blowing from the rear of the vent system…we dive in for the cause and fix.

Most vehicles have so much that takes place that is completely out of sight and out of mind…until something stops working. (Especially cold air conditioning that is needed in the 115-degree temps of an Arizona summer…ouch.)

We quickly identified the clicking, popping noise coming from the Rear Mode Actuator. No fancy tools needed here. At best if you want to be special, pull out a mechanics stethoscope and listen in…otherwise, the writing is pretty much on the wall.

The Rear Mode Actuator is responsible for funneling the correct amount of hot, cold or blend of air depending on what you set the blend knob, switch or button to on the dash. Essentially the function is very similar to a door that you simply open and close.

We chose to go with Motorcraft. Here is the part :

This particular repair is simple enough. Be particularly careful when removing the plastic components as they can easily break and cost beaucoup money to replace ( yes..looks like cheap plastic, however, they can fetch ridiculous money…take your time here.)

For the most part people, …actuators of all types can click and pop. They are electrical mechanical components and specifically, as you can see in the video explanation, the shaft can come undone from a broken plastic seated gear and move when it should not, creating excessive play and that popping noise. If you happen to have an actuator in the front dash, that will be more challenging and in some occasions require removal of the complete dash assembly.

Lincoln Town Car Cooling Fan Noise

The Lincoln Town Car paid a visit to the garage today with a fierce noise emanating from the engine bay. A closer look revealed a scraping sound from the fan assembly.

As we removed the suspect fan assembly we could identify lots of play in the actual shaft of the electric motor as well as upon a closer look, a plastic fan blade that had separated.

When the shaft of that motor starts to age, it can develop excessive lateral play and cause that fan blade to wobble and come apart. In severe occasions that whole assembly can come apart and project itself through the radiator, creating a huge financial mess.

Reviving Chevy Truck Inside The Garage

As it has been extremely busy at the garage, we found the time to take measures to get this Chevy Truck revived from what would seem like a cemetery of a desert wasteland.

Anything sitting for 5 years in our neck of the woods requires a serious safety check of all things undercarriage and deadly. Black Widows and other related insects\spiders etc. This is a key focal point of our garage safety that we take pretty serious ( my forehead sting from many years ago was no joke. ) So first things first, we totally spray down the nooks and crannies of the whole truck, let it sit overnight and recheck it again in the morning.

After de-webbing and making all things spider clear…we begin.

To be expected, a battery replacement was initially the first step, and to our surprise….we fired up and the engine started without too much drama. An extended crank was present, otherwise, we sounded and looked pretty good for a truck that was sitting for 5 years.

As fuel starts to age and is actually not put in to use it becomes varnish like and resembles a shellack that you may see on some homemade style furniture. Not an ideal situation for a combustion chamber and spark plugs. A fuel filter and a draining of all old fuel is a priority. Additionally, deep cleaning of the throttle body and air induction will help clear up and carbon deposits. Surprisingly fuel pressure was great with awesome fuel volume, so the fuel pump gets to live another day as is.

The ignition is pretty aged and we certainly are going to replace spark plugs, wires, and the cap\rotor to ensure we have a great spark for our fresh fuel. Additionally, we are going to take the extra measure and replace the aged ignition coil, as it is highly likely to come back in the garage as an ignition failure once we have all the new & restored secondary ignition parts in place.

Tip: The throttle body injector harness is pretty common to fray and short at the point of where the air cleaner sits (from repeated removal and install wires can become frayed). This can cause a phantom hesitation and on some occasions, a crank no-start condition. Be sure to look closely at those and replace if necessary.

Our brake pedal went to the floor, and we knew based upon a dry well of the two well brake mastery cylinder reservoir that there was a compromise on the brake hydraulic system. Removal of the rear wheels reveals a leaking wheel cylinder, aged brake springs and shoe linings that needed service.

This project was simple, as ideally, it was a goal of the client to tackle the bare bones of safety and reliability. There were additional mechanical items needed, but certainly ok to put on a to-do list for future service.

As the garage is quite noisy, we do apologize for the background noise of the swamp coolers( in the summer months I hate to turn them off as it is approx. 115 degrees outside, and the crew is nice and chill, and for that matter …nice and happy.)

13 Leased Honda Civic Curb Checked

Curbing checking a vehicle can be somewhat alarming and in most occasions very damaging to the suspension and steering of the vehicle. Not so much in this case as we dive into the leased Honda Civic.

While driving we certainly identified a subtle wobble in steering wheel along with a slight brake pulsation. Now we could visually see the bent portion of the rim but wanted to ensure it was officially not repairable. Getting this rim\tire mounted on our RoadForce balancer would give us an exact reading of runout ( in reality we really just wanted to show you how much this rim was bent from a very minor curb check episode)

Replacing the rim with an LKQ (fancy for used) to keep costs to a minimum will do the trick.

Examining the brakes reveal brake linings that have plenty of life and brake rotors that are slightly scored and out of round. An easy inexpensive fix and a happy day for our client.

Inside The Garage Toyota Camry Lights Not Working

The Camry came in early this morning with the owner complaining of no exterior or interior lights. After deeper discussion, it was quickly discovered that all of these symptoms took place after a recent battery replacement elsewhere.

As we immediately suspected that the battery cables were initially installed backward, we discovered a blown 100 Amp Charging System fuse.

This fuse is relatively simple to replace as long as you are careful aligning the eyelets of engine harness to the fuse blade seat. Utilizing a simple magnet while slightly pulling up on the harness to align usually does the trick.

An easy and inexpensive fix.

Gmc Truck Rear Main Seal Leaks & Steering Play

The GMC Pickup had been leaking for some time and returned in the garage for repairs. Additionally, viable steering play in the wheel had developed and we investigated.

The GMC\Chevy trucks can develop an oil leak in the area of the lower bell housing of the transmission. Utilizing an engine dye to circulate throughout and capturing the exact leak locations with a UV Dye light and goggles did certainly help, however, we did months ago replace the oil pan gasket and new head of time we still had a rear main seal oil leak to contend with at a later date.

With the transmission removed you can easily identify where the source of these leaks are coming from. Unfortunately the rear main seal is rubber and over time the seal will get hard and brittle. (2:12)

Not so much in the case of this engine since the flywheel has a one position only dowel,but in general, always mark the flywheel before removing so there is no question about developing a balance issue or vibration. (1:55)

After completely checking the steering linkages , we quickly identified the steering gear with a ton of excessive play from the inner tie rods. Now typically you can replace the tie rods themselves, but in this case the rack and pinion was leaking from everywhere and it was going to be replaced as a complete unit.

Diesel Into Gas Engine Fix

Not an easy thing to deal with, or explain to the rest of the world when this happens. Don’t feel like a schmuck, it can happen.

Administering Diesel fuel into a gas driven vehicle is not as bad, on most occasions, as everyone will lead you to believe (the reverse of that situation can be more in depth, as gas has next to no oiling\lubricating properties when compared to diesel).

This older Mustang was towed in and we investigated a logical and cost-effective approach. Here are a few tips if you get caught on the end of the wrong fuel hose at the gas station :

If you caught the act right away ..you may luck out by easily removing some of the diesel via the fuel rail. Engage the key on\off to cycle the fuel pump and capture the contaminating “stuff”. Now be realistic, as this option may be a desperate attempt if you're caught in the middle of nowhere with limited options. Make sure you're cautious, as you certainly don’t want to catch an engine intake or the plastic components on fire, AND, always dispose of the nasty stuff in an eco-sensible manner.

The second step is surprisingly very practical and the most cost-effective way out…when you can find a garage that has a Gas Caddy. Call ahead if your towing it into a potential garage and make sure they have one of these on hand, as it can be a huge money saver ( we have one and ultimately did not use for this video for obvious reasons, so as to highlight the next step).

The dreaded fuel tank pull and drain ( ..oh yea..on the ground without a lift …your dreading for sure) Having a lift for sure helps here.

If you totally spaced out at the pump and filled it to the brim with diesel …time to pull the tank and drain it completely dry. This Mustang was fairly simple. Not the case in many other platforms, as your removing quite a bit of engineered goodness to get out of the vehicle.

A word about fuel pumps:

In my experience of almost 30 years …I have rarely seen the case in the above scenario that would require an immediate replacement of a fuel pump or fuel injectors. Now …you can be the judge of age\wear\tear\mileage ..and decide if you're not going to risk going through all of that to not replace the fuel pump while you are right there. We always provide options to our folks that come in and advise accordingly. So …make it your call wisely either way & if you decide on a fuel pump assembly…stick with as close to Factory OE that you can get, otherwise, yes less expensive pumps will fail sooner than later.

Chrysler Sebring Coolant Outlet Leak

The Sebring actually had some pretty low miles considering the year, but nevertheless had a very common leak from the plastic water outlet.

When replacing this component it is recommended that you utilize Mopar Chrysler OE part (Mopar-04792630AA-Engine-Coolant-Outlet-Flange) There are differences in quality as we reveal a few points. We have used the aftermarket outlets in the past with little success.

In theory, you should remove the upper intake, but can avoid this added step by utilizing a longer swivel head style ratcheting wrench to sneak out the bolt situated partially under the plenum. Make sure to be cautious about installing the new housing, as it can be easily over-torqued and break.

Another vehicle towed in with symptoms of an extended crank no start with a major fuel odor present.

With fuel spewing out of the tailpipe we quickly determined that a fuel injector/s were at fault. Typically a failing injector pintle will cause the fuel to stream as opposed to atomize or mist fuel distribution to the engine combustion chamber.

We were very fortunate, as this excessive fueling to the cylinders and exhaust can cause major damage to that expensive catalytic converter or the engine itself. The partially or unburned fuel can embed\soak the substrate of the catalytic converter causing temperatures to soar, resulting in a fire. Additionally, that raw fuel can wash away the cylinders and cause major engine damage. Thankfully the driver of this vehicle could not really get anywhere fast right when the symptoms occurred.

If you have any signs of a check engine light or smell fuel, immediately have the vehicle towed and checked out. Ultimately, you will save yourself from excessive damage to components that technically were in good shape prior.

Honda Pilot Ac Clutch Test

A quick way to test an ac clutch, especially for the Honda platform, as they can have common failures of the ac compressor clutch.

A digital voltmeter, 1:48, a test of resistance range should be between 3.9-4.3 Ohms. Additionally, the clutch gap clearance .014-.024 should be checked with a feeler gauge. 2:57.

It is vital, after replacement of compressor that the ac system is put in a deep vacuum for some time, so all of the moisture is removed.

Ideally, if you are keeping the vehicle for some time make sure to invest in a new OE compressor.

Pt Cruiser Fire Battery Bad Eng Mounts

A very interesting situation with this PT Cruiser, as it was towed into the garage as a no crank no start situation. The driver stated while cruising the check engine light came on and the engine started to surge and felt like it was ” dancing”, then quickly stalled, as a small fire ensued right in the area of the battery compartment.

We were actually able to get the engine started very carefully and immediately noticed engine and transmission mounts that were completely broken causing the trans-axle to rock back and forth violently. Diving in deeper we are able to assess how this fire and symptoms evolved.

As an ignition source, we surmised that the transmission fluid dipstick vibrated enough over time (the mounting bracket was broken) to cause some transmission fluid to seep out and ultimately end up on a very frayed battery cable which arced/sparked. (not totally conclusive but certainly a starting point).

The fix: Replace defective engine and transmission mounts, correct the exposed battery cable, mount transmission dipstick tube, and pressure-wash engine bay to clean out remnants of fire retardant. As this a starting point, we road-tested the vehicle extensively, while advising the driver to return in a few days for a courtesy recheck to make certain all was well and no other surprises would surface.

Nissan Murano Camshaft Sensor Tips

A very common fault for late model Nissan, including the 07 Nissan Murano, of which we uncover specifications, testing, and replacement.

A PO340 fault is a camshaft sensor position code, and with a basic check should not have any oil contaminants on the sensor connectors. The valve cover gaskets can be a common area of leak source towards the rear of the cylinder heads. Cure the leak, clean the connector and, on some occasions, that will resolve the problem. An oil soaked connector will not allow for a good pathway of the electronic signal.

The camshaft sensor should have a voltage reading of 1.0-4.0 volts. (The pulse cycle will change as engine RPM is increased ; 3:29 on video reveals what a bad waveform looks like).

When replacing the camshaft sensor it is highly recommended to replace them in pairs along with crankshaft sensor, as they can reproduce the same type of symptoms ( an extended crank or a phantom stalling situation).

Helping the public

A native Arizonan, Andrews sought out career choices with customer service as a priority. Her time as a medical secretary, a pharmacy technician, selling timeshares in Sedona and real estate in the Valley were all about helping the public.

She was ambitious, but not for herself. by 32, she was a single mom raising four children. Andrews was grateful to have the support of her family, including her brother, Ian. He frequented her home, along with his high school friend, Zach Andrews. Zach and Aimee became good friends and over the years their friendship blossomed into love. In 2014, the couple married.

Zach worked as an automotive-service technician at Desert Car Care for several years, working in the team environment that Leutz created.

In October 2014, Leutz was looking for someone to assist with outside marketing efforts. Andrews shared her interest in joining the company and was hired as a part-timer.

Leutz trained her on the specifics of the automotive service business and her customer service skills and vibrant personality took care of the rest.

“Frank is a great teacher and brought it down to a level of understanding instead of the ‘industry’ speak”, she said. “I work in a fun, friendly atmosphere where it is clean, it smells good and the lobby is nicely decorated. She built new relationships within the community and reignited Desert Car Care’s connection with the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.

Several months later, Leutz had to make a change at the customer service desk, the face of the company, and Andrews filled in.

A quick study, she learned the business from the service technicians in the shop, creating great relationships between them and the customers. Within a few weeks, Leutz offered Andrews the full-time position as Desert Car Care of Chandler’s customer service technician.

Andrews, who recently gave birth to Harper Ashley Andrews, will return to work for the Ladies Car Care Clinic.

Transmission fluid should have a reddish to slightly brown tint and not smelled burnt or have metal residue. Burnt transmission fluid is a financial disaster waiting …run far away from this condition.

Brake fluid should be clear and have no signs of moisture. Utilizing brake fluid test strips is a quick peace of mind. If the system is contaminated with moisture or anything but brake fluid….it can be a bank buster.

The radiator coolant should have no trace evidence of a milky substance that may look like chocolate milk, as this is a clear sign of a cylinder gasket or cylinder head failure…which stems from a serious overheat episode. Stay clear from the milky radiator coolant as this is for sure not only a bank buster but a coronary ready to take place.

Power steering fluid should be clear and levels not low. A growling or whining steering function could be present and is an indication that the steering system may have substantial leaks or worse …failing steering components. Rats Hiding In Car Engines During Cold Weather

It’s cold out there! Everything wants to escape the cold weather and stay warm and that includes pack rats. We have already seen several vehicles that have sustained damage from these critters sharpening their teeth on wires, plastic and rubber hoses. One customer sustained over $700 in damages, while another at approximately $300.

How much wire is in your vehicle? According to the Collision Repair and Refinishing: A Foundation Course for Technicians Manual, the average vehicle contains over 30 miles of wiring. How to prevent this damage? Here are some tips to keep your vehicle safe!

Tips To Prevent Pack Rats From Attacking Your Vehicle

• Be Alert. If you park outside, keep your eyes open for rat droppings and pieces of cactus that show up near or under your vehicle. Lift and check under the hood often. Be extra careful when heavy rain or cold weather may cause rats in the area to look for better quarters.

• Check for pack rat nests. Look around in the nearby area for pack rat nests. A single female may be responsible for as many as 20 young a year, all who need to find new homes (like your vehicle) as they mature. Solution? Remove nearby nests which can significantly reduce the risk of attack, however, before removing a nest, the resident rats should be trapped. That alternative shelter will most likely be your car.

• Rat-Proof Your Garage. It only takes an opening the size of a nickel for a pack rat to enter a garage. They are excellent climbers and can enter no matter if the hole is high or low. Rats are attracted to an area they can enter, not large predators, so a poorly sealed garage is worse than parking outside.

• Open Space. If a rat-proof garage is not available, park the vehicle in the most open area possible. The ideal area for the vehicle will have at least five to ten feet of totally clear space on all four sides with no trees or another cover above the vehicle.

• No Stored Items Close By. If a carport is the only shelter for the vehicle, remove all items such as boxes, yard tools, and trash containers.

• Vegetation Trimmed. Keep all vegetation in the immediate area well-trimmed. You should be able to clearly see under and behind all bushes and other plants that are anywhere near the vehicle. You also want to avoid rock borders that rats can hide next to.

• Hood Open. For many vehicles, leaving the hood open takes away the sense of enclosure and protection that the rat is seeking. If you choose to leave the hood open, be sure to disconnect any internal engine compartment lights to avoid a dead battery in the morning. Also, secure the hood with some type of strap if high winds are a possibility. Leaving the hood open does not work as well on newer vehicles with engine covers and shrouds that still offer plenty of hiding areas.

• Light. A utility light hanging from above with an open hood works best. Be sure to use a yellow “bug” bulb to minimize flying insects. A light under the car may help, but not as much as light from above. Lights are not effective on newer cars with engine covers and shrouds.

During the inspection, we notated very worn outer tie rod ends and aged struts and shocks. The Tie rod ends can certainly cause excessive tire wear, while the worn struts will compromise the ride and feel, but not immediately cause an issue with tire wear. Engine Coolant System Rust

The importance of utilizing the proper coolant/antifreeze in your vehicle is key. Pouring water on a regular basis into the radiator instead of the proper coolant blend can wreak havoc on both metal and plastic components.

Volkswagen Emissions Crisis

Volkswagen has recently admitted to a disproportionate amount of carbon monoxide readings for well over 800,000 vehicles and is struggling to recover its initial wave of #DieselGate conundrums. Rigging emissions data levels to game the system will undoubtedly cause further damage to the iconic brand.

How damaging?

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that can be extremely deadly. There have been many accounts of tragic CO situations that can lead to serious injury or death. This particular gas is taken very seriously, especially within testing for emissions readings for vehicles from State to State, and for that matter around the world. Vehicle manufacturers are regulated strictly and must conform within guidelines.

Very Tough Guidelines.

As listed on the EPA website in detail, the consumer is ultimately responsible for regular emissions testing after the purchase of a vehicle. For the most part, these state inspections and emissions requirements are fairly simple, as long as the check engine light remains off, and the evaporative emissions controls, i.e. gas cap, are in good shape with no compromise or leaks.

The Cheat.

Classic Car 1976 Corvette Repair

We had previously performed a pre-purchase inspection of this 1976 Corvette and ultimately was given the green light to start repairs to minor faults that we discovered originally. Now granted, this was not a Barrett Jackson ready Corvette, however, was exactly what the client was looking for…a weekend cruiser.

During the test drive and inspection, we did discover worn lower ball joints and control arm bushings, causing front end noise when going over bumps, as well as a shimmy that was felt in the steering wheel at cruising speeds. Additionally we did replace front leaking brake calipers, pad linings and resurfaced the brake rotors utilizing the Pro Cut On Car Brake Lathe (Link below for more details of brake lathe, as it is a time saver in the garage, as well as in some occasions a recommended lathe for some vehicle manufacturers when resurfacing brake rotors).

During the course of the initial inspection, it was additionally noted that there was a shudder from the rear of the vehicle during acceleration. Further evaluation revealed metallic flaking from the area of the rear U joints and considerable play in the drive shaft from these worn components. Replacement of the U joints would cure the shudder and avoid catastrophe from an eventual separation…no bueno.

My Engine Is Leaking Oil

There is nothing as disturbing as coming home from a long day from school or work to find a nasty oil stain in your garage driveway. It surely did not seem that way the day prior, and now you may be concerned about what may be leaking from the undercarriage of your vehicle.

On this episode of Inside the Garage we discuss tips regarding those pesky oil leaks.

The very first basic tip of any suspect leak is to always ensure there is fluid in the engine crankcase, transmission, steering, and brake system. Remove the related dipsticks and check the levels. Topping off these fluids will immediately ensure that you do not damage the hardware of those systems. Additionally, always make sure that you utilize the correct fluids for the correct system/s of the vehicle. Mixing these fluids will cause more problems.

Smoke emanating from the tailpipe of your vehicle is a sure sign that either your piston rings or valve train components are tired and worn, which in most occasions will require major mechanical to remedy. If you're not seeing any oil on the ground, you are probably dealing with these type of concerns.

In most occasions where you may be leaking engine oil on to the hot exhaust manifold components, you will smell a burnt odor as well as see smoke from under the hood from the engine bay area. Don’t take this particular symptom lightly, as this could be a potential fire hazard as well as intoxicate the inside of your cabin of the vehicle making you dizzy or perhaps noxious.

A common area of these smokey odorous leaks can be from the valve cover gaskets. They are not terribly expensive to replace and will make a huge difference.

If your engine is consuming oil, and your tailpipe does not seem to blow or puff blue smoke, you more than likely have leaking spark plug tube grommet seals. These seals are mounted internally in the valve cover body, and you won't see any external oil leaking on to the ground. If the valve cover rubber gaskets are being replaced and you have this design of tube grommets, make sure to replace those rubber seals while you're in there.

After a recent oil change, you may have developed a new oil leak.

What can be common during an oil leak is an oil filter that is not torqued properly or the vital rubber seal on the body of the oil filter may be leaking. Replace it with a new oil filter. Additionally, it is always a good measure to replace at least the oil drain plug o-ring/gasket or even better yet, the complete drain plug. These drain plugs are inexpensive and will give you peace of mind and of course a clean driveway.

Timing Belt

If your engine has a timing belt, it is absolutely critical that it is replaced at the required interval (typically between 90-105,000 miles). Additionally, you need to ensure that the related tensioner/s and idler pulleys are replaced, along with the water pump (if driven by the cogs on the timing belt).

On many occasions, if this vital rubber timing belt is not replaced, you could sustain damage to the valve train and in some cases will require the replacement of the engine.

Something most people don’t know about me is the fact that I was kind of a car guy in high school. So much so that after high school, before the military and college, I actually worked as a mechanic for 4 years. Brake systems were kind of my specialty back when I turned wrenches. So this morning I went and jacked up the front of my car, kicked on the compressor and got ready for a job that I believed would take me about 15-20 minutes tops.

Then, I ran into a problem. See, my fancy-dancy TL with nearly 270,000 miles on it has security locks on the wheels. And I could not find the key.

Long story, but after spending over an hour with myself and my lovely bride Jessica looking like crazy for it, we finally threw up our hands and said, it’s gone.

Enter Periscope
If you know what the video streaming service Periscope is, you are probably wondering what Periscope has to do with any of this. Well, over the last 4-5 months I have got to know a mechanic and shop owner from Chandler on both Periscope and Twitter.

Frank Leutz, know online as @UrMechanic is someone I have been following and talking to online. One thing that I love about Frank is his honesty and compassion for others. This is a guy who you can tell really cares about not only his clients but the general public.

We all know that mechanics don’t have the best reputation, something they have in common with us real estate agents. Frank and his Desert Car Care shops are out to change that. Just like Nick, Shar and I are trying to do with real estate. That is probably why I have developed such a fondness for Frank in a short time. I care about my clients and their experience more than anything, and so does Frank.

I worked in the automotive business long enough as a mechanic, and later two years selling tools for Cornwell Tools, that I feel my BS detector is pretty dialed in.

Using Periscope For Business

One trend in social media is that the bigger social media sites are buying smaller, more niche-type sites.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, reportedly made a bid for SnapChat, etc.

Then there’s Periscope, a live video streaming app that was purchased by Twitter in March. It’s a niche app that has fascinated me and I have been trying to see how to make it work for the independent tire dealer.

It’s been thought that Twitter purchased Periscope to contend with Instagram. Whatever the reasoning, the platform has taken off and there are uses for Periscope both personally and professionally.

I have done research on the subject and came across this Business2Community article that details some of the professional uses: product videos, live Q&A, focus groups and professional “How Tos” are all detailed.

For the shop owner, I think professional “How Tos” and product videos could be a great way to use this live video platform. If you have a new tire line, why not broadcast some of the features, the way it looks, the benefits, etc.? We often hear that this age of consumer does research online before making a purchase. Why not give the people what they want and present this information in a way that they want to consume it?

This could work for the demonstration videos as well. A shop could walk customers through checking oil or tire pressure. These are simple things everyone should know how to do, but there are probably some of your customers — and potential customers — who do not.

You also can incorporate this live video streaming with other promotions or social media campaigns you are running. For instance, do you ever have any customer appreciation raffles at the shop? You could host a Periscope broadcast when you announce the winner. This shows transparency when you do pull the winning ticket and it also allows people to be involved virtually.

Since this platform launched, I have been on the lookout for uses of this live video streaming in our industry. I wanted to see how it was being used and was waiting for the day I came across it. Good things happen to those who wait. I came across Frank Leutz, owner of Chandler, Ariz.-based Desert Car Care, Twitter account @UrMechanic that was using Periscope to showcase a barbeque.

It was simple. It was something that probably a lot of shops do out there: hosting an employee appreciation meal. As the employees enjoyed their delicious-looking food, I was part of the occasion, but from the comfort of my desk chair in the Tire Business office in Akron. I “traveled” around with Frank as he showed off his employees and as he walked through the different bays of the shop. I got a full tour of what was happening at Desert Car Care that day, and it was great.

I reached out to Frank and asked him about Periscope and why he decided to get involved.

“I think our industry has a very difficult time relating to one of the most powerful segments and one of the most powerful demographics, and that is the Millennial,” he explained.

“We’re kind of stuck in this mode of conventional advertising and branding and we haven’t really done a good job on social media.”

He can see the attitude that a shop posts something on a social media platform and then it’s done: they participated and that’s it. However, that is not all that needs to be done.

With Periscope, he said it was a natural progression because he had been on Twitter for a long time. While he’s on other sites, Twitter is his main platform.

“When Periscope launched, it was two months where I stood there, biting my nails, waiting for it to be ready for the Android,” Frank said since it launched first for iOS (iPhone, etc. products).

He said he knew it was going to be awesome from the get-go. He had done some video work in the past, but this was a simple way to live broadcast right from his phone. And most importantly, it presented an opportunity to engage.

“We could take this platform and bring people to the culture of not only Desert Car Care…but of a mechanic,” Frank said.

With that, the videos could execute advice — such as money-saving tips — for its audience. As of July 17, Frank has done 90 broadcasts. He started using the platform about six or seven weeks ago.

He eventually plans to re-purpose the videos on other channels.

This app definitely has given another way to reach consumers in a cutting-edge way.

I spoke with Frank for a while about social media and the independent tire industry. Stay tuned to this social media blog series for more of what he had to say, including an initiative to help other shops get involved on social media.

Items to have on hand are plenty of water, a cooler with ice, ice packs, sun screen, cool loose clothing, towels, blankets in case you have to sit on asphalt, umbrellas for shade and a small car battery-powered fan, collapsible drinking cup, and jumper cables. To prevent heat stroke: For children, a damp cool rag applied to the back of the neck and aim the fan at them to cool. For pets, offer water to drink, then gently spray or apply cool, tepid water to the overheated dog. You can also apply wet, cool towels along the dog’s chest, abdomen, between its legs and around the neck. Do NOT use ice water, ice baths or apply ice to an overheated dog. Aim the fan to accelerate the cooling process.

4. Seat belts and harness. Have them checked to make sure they are working properly. Children five to eight years old or less than 4 feet 9 inches tall, should be riding in belt-positioning booster seats in the back seat. Keep animals secured inside a ventilated animal crate or in a pet-safety harness. A safety harness connected to the seat belt, with a safety tether, allows them to lie down, sit up, or stand, but remain safely restrained.

5. Let your vehicle cool down. Before loading the kids and pets in the car, turn on the air and let the vehicle cool down so that the seatbelts, leather upholstery are ok to touch.

6. Hot asphalt. Shoes stay on! Children can kick off their shoes and be in a hurry to get outside and forget how hot the ground is. Veterinarians see too many dogs with burnt paw pads. There are extreme all weather boots available at your local pet store to keep their pads safe.

7. Install a side window shade. To help keep it cooler and protecting the eyes while allowing your child or pet to see outside.

8. Lock car doors. According to a National SAFE KIDS Campaign survey, only half of all parents lock their cars when they park at home. Children like to play and an unlocked car can look like fun, yet it can be deadly. Once in the car, children can become confused by the door handle’s shape and be unable to open the door from the inside and they may accidentally lock the doors by leaning on a power control device and then be unable to get out.

9. First aid kit – sunscreen, bandages in different sizes, Benadryl, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, sterile saline (contact lens solution), roll gauze and gauze sponges, tweezers, multi-tool with scissors and adhesive tape.

10. Emergency numbers of police, highway patrol and your mechanic are good emergency numbers to have in your cell phone and written down in the owner’s manual of your vehicle in case your cell phone battery runs down.

The search continues across the Valley for those who may have been affected by the recent arrest of a man suspected of selling counterfeit airbags to individuals and businesses in the area.

As Officer James Holmes, a Phoenix police spokesman, recently stated, “The arrest of Mr. Dwight Smith and the manufacturing of counterfeit airbags have caused justifiable concern by the public regarding the safety and functionality of their supplement restraint systems in their cars.”

As a driver, how can you look at your car and know for sure whether you’re part of the affected group?

I asked that question of Frank Leutz, CEO of Desert Car Care and chapter president of the Automotive Service Association of Arizona.

“When you look at the steering wheel, where the airbag is, if the seams are irregular or crooked, you could have a counterfeit,” he said. “The plastic seam on the airbag must have a perfect fit in the steering-wheel housing. Like the seams on a skirt or blouse, look for crumples or an irregular seam pattern. They will not be straight in the steering- wheel pad.”

Phoenix police also point to CarFax as another tool for drivers to learn about their vehicle’s history. If you believe yours could be part of this affected group, contact the vehicle manufacturer. You’ll also want to contact the authorities. Homeland Security and the police are trying to pinpoint how many counterfeit airbags could be on the road right now and where they may have been sold.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, 1 in 5 Americans have allergies that impact their daily lives. You’re not necessarily safe just because you’re inside an insulated vehicle.

Clean and de-clutter your vehicle by getting rid of any trash and then vacuuming the seats. Don’ forget to vacuum the floor mats, dust off the dashboard and wipe down the exterior of your car as any pollen stuck to it can be transferred inside your vehicle through the air filters.

Then visit your automotive service center to check out three critical areas to make things more comfortable:

• A cabin air filter is a feature that cleans the air that comes into the interior through the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Many cabin air filters are located behind the glove box, under the dashboard and may not be easy to reach, or under the hood where fresh air enters the HVAC system. Recommendations on when it should be replaced vary by manufacturer, check the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual. If you drive in heavy traffic in an urban area that has poor air quality, you could need to replace the filter annually or even more often.

Also driving in our desert climate where there is a lot of dust.

• A clogged air-conditioning evaporator drain hole filled with debris allows condensation, which is a natural by-product in using your AC system, to accumulate inside the evaporator case creating a huge nightmare for fungus and bacteria growth.

• The air intake near the cowl is the screened area usually right under the windshield wipers and door frame weather stripping for dead leaves, trapped dirt and other debris that hold moisture cultivating mold and mildew growth.

An Oil Leak & How One Younger Technician Gets It Right

Realizing that business can be complicated at times with processes, procedures and “things”…we often forget that it is ..the people that are the lifeblood. Without individuals that can effectively operate under the framework of these “things”…it just does not happen..or at least it just does not..last. Today was a reminder of that. Our youngest technician, a great guy, and quite frankly a very smart and tenacious individual..took the time, under the very hectic circumstance to painfully slow down a very detail oriented repair…an Oil leak (replacement of gasket). This repair is very straight forward and relatively simple. However, THE most important process ( I have seen many seasoned technicians miss this time after time)…is the “curing” process of the vital silicone that seals up the surfaces. Often times technicians are extremely time managed to properly service vehicles..and sometimes whip through these repairs…not negligently, but methodically. When a mechanic has the experience..it becomes second nature. When a younger technician arrives at repairing or servicing a vehicle…it is very easy to fall into the trap of “speed is efficiency..as oppose to…” quality is number one”. This younger technician took the most important aspect of the repair ..and slowed it down..to get it right..making quality “his” number one. Taking the time to get it right is crucial ..and makes all off us who we are. We have all experienced an assembly line situation with just about any industry that we may have done business with. ..Car washes, Retail services, Restaurants etc. The feeling that one gets is not at all special, and typically leaves us not returning, as the quality of that product or service was less than stellar. We all thrive for an experience that gives us true value behind the money that we work hard for. This meant a great deal to me, and I could see in this younger technician…it meant a great deal to him.

As a parent and small business entrepreneur, one of my biggest fears has always been losing sight of all the little things that make life special,” says Frank Leutz. “These little things are often the very things that are so magical to our children and companions.” Something tells us this grounded entrepreneur and family man will never lose sight and instead is the epitome of an “inspirational dad.” Leutz, owner and CEO of Desert Car Care Centers, was born in Frankfurt, Germany, grew up in Harlem and became a jazz and salsa musician. He joined the Navy doing mine sweep operations in the Persian Gulf until he was transferred west. In 1990, after getting a job at a Chevy dealership, his wife encouraged him to go independent. How does one go from playing trombone in Harlem to running three repair shops in Arizona? Well, let’s see: Frank Leutz grew up in Harlem and became a jazz salsa musician accomplished enough to play Carnegie Hall. He joined the Navy doing mine sweep operations in the Persian Gulf until he was transferred west. Then he drifted into auto repair after getting a job at a Chevy dealership, met and married his wife, who encouraged him to go independent, and opened the first of his Desert Car Care Service Centers in 2004. Whew.

“Before you leave an industry you can’t give up on the time (invested),” says Leutz of his last career move. “You’ve got to try it on your own, and that’s when I went into business. Eighteen-hour days of doing everything wrong– not to say that we’re doing everything right now, but we are always growing.” To the point, he recently opened his third store in the populous Chandler suburb of Phoenix.

Affable and gregarious, Leutz is not the least bit shy. Unlike other repair shop websites which run generic videos from service, he produces and hosts a few of his own, giving practical and up to date advice on consumer topics such as preventing catalytic converter theft or buying cars online. And while nothing in his varied background includes formal education in business, Leutz has developed a philosophy on the subject.

“Entrepreneurial spirit, with (an) attitude of gratitude and pride of our industry,” writes Leutz, led him “to successfully launch Desert Car Care Service Centers in 2004 by having a meaningful relationship with the staff and their families (through) the promotion of higher levels of communication for growth, attaining personal goals, and a balance to life that is rewarding.” He also cites his company’s “exceptional ability to tune in to a Team Culture and the strength of the team, created by input from all levels of [the] staff. While adhering to the mantra of value-driven company culture and providing higher levels of service experience for our clients, a top priority is placed on levels of higher standards and ethics.

Core beliefs: adherence to Success is not Final, Failure not Fatal; it is the Courage that Counts.”

Heady stuff, especially when you consider its spread out over three stores. But Leutz has established a baseline of expertise through industry-sponsored training, augmented with nearly equal amounts of in-house training. “It would be very easy for me to bring in an outside expert regarding phone skills, for we’ll improve to a sort of plateau,” he gives by way of an example. “But once or twice a month, the service advisors will actually cross-check phone calls, listening in on each other. My thought is when it comes to creating that higher skill set, we can learn a lot from each other.”

In return, the staff and their families are perked with company outings like weekend cabin getaways, boating excursions, and concerts, affording team members time to bond. “The emphasis is on employees not working for me, but WITH me,” Leutz states, the caps his.

Some of this new age thinking reflects old-fashioned common sense. Charity work is a priority, like refurbishing cars for the needy. Leutz kills two birds by assigning this to a less experienced technician. “He may have less than three years,” he explains, but under the shop’s direction is tasked with overhauling the car. “It’s about giving back that skill set and time that’s huge.”

It’s all a part of Leutz’s “three-legged stool”: message, media, and market. “In identifying the type of clientele we are attracting,” he writes in a company profile, “our message and the medium of that message becomes clear.” Besides rewarding referrals with a complimentary oil change, one remarkably simple exit marketing tool, which Leutz says compliments their 75 percent repeat business, is giving away travel toothbrushes with the note ‘Maintain your teeth, and we will maintain your vehicle.’

“We understand that when somebody comes in they are not just here to check an oil leak,” Leutz says of his relationship with the clientele. “They are here because we are going to get caught up on what their Uncle John is doing, how the daughter is doing through her first year in college.”

A carefully maintained customer database with this kind of info provides the foundation upon which Desert Car Care builds their image, i.e. their authority, with events like car clinics and appearances on car talk radio shows. To that end, the company has a publicist and a communications director, who is currently working with Leutz to create future promotional opportunities like a possible automotive merit badge for the Boy Scouts and high school speaking engagements before first-time drivers.

“We also do a lot of work via the internet because we get a pretty good client base on the website,” Leutz reports. “Reputation management is very important to what we do; we invite any of our shortcomings to be put into a review because it is not only an opportunity to correct it but to be transparent. The internet consumer is very smart and they realize that the bulk of reviews might be massaged. When they see shortcomings blasted with a response, a productive response, that is also part of creating authority in your marketplace.

“I think what makes us unique is the promotion of our culture,” Leutz resolves. “We have to do all the right things regarding the health indicators of our business, having trained on key systems and procedures so we are consistent. But underlining that is the strong culture that we are trying to promote throughout the whole organization. You know the pied piper? If he is playing his tune right (i.e. creating a culture), he’s going to get a ton of folks to follow him. Our mantra and our culture are like that, and some of the things we do as an organization allow us to continue the promotion of that culture.”
